MCSS has previously implemented a small grant project funded by the MFF on public awareness and the conservation of this highly threatened species which surely brought many interest in protecting sea turtle and further motivating coastal tourism businesses to use turtle watching as another attraction for their visitors.
The main event was on Saturday 10th August in Beau Vallon, one of the most frequented beach areas on the island of Mahe. The festival included a number of turtle-themed activities aimed at engaging children, and included sandcastle competitions, arts & crafts and snorkeling. There were also several food and refreshment stands alongside crafts for sale from local artists.
The festival attracted members of the local community as well as visiting tourists. A school competition had been earlier organised and the award ceremony was held on Friday August 9. Publicity was widespread on radio, local newspapers and other media outlets.
The event was supported by a number of local NGOs, the Ministries of Environment and Education the Seychelles Tourism Board. MFF in Seychelles was an official partner of the event and assisted with activities on both days and proudly sponsored the public information posters, dissemination of information and some prizes as well as providing in kind assistance to GVI and MCSS with the planning and organisation of the event.
