Pakistan: IUCN and Engro Elengy Terminal Limited to restore mangroves on 500 hectares of coastline

Location: Karachi, Pakistan. 20th Apr 2016

Through its Business and Biodiversity Programme, IUCN Pakistan is working with Engro Elengy Terminal (Pvt) Limited (EETPL), a liquefied natural gas handling and processing company, to implement the ‘Restoration of Mangroves Ecosystem in Port Qasim Area’ project. The initiative aims to plant mangroves on 500-hectares of land surrounding Port Qasim in Karachi, Pakistan.

The project is being undertaken to mitigate impacts associated with the construction of a liquified natural gas terminal, which resulted in the conversion of 50 hectares of mangrove forests into reclaimed industrial land.

An exposure visit to one of the planting sites near Port Qasim on Ashan Island was recently organised for approximately 60 students from the Karachi University (KU) Department of Geography. Led by Professor Dr. Syed Jamil Kazmi and other faculty members, the university was joined by officials from Engro Elengy Terminal Limited along with senior officials from IFFCO Pakistan Private Limited and Dalda Foods Private Limited. The students, faculty members and company officials also planted mangroves at the site.

The exposure visit was intended to demonstrate the importance of mangrove ecosystem conservation to the students, as well as to provide them with hands-on experience on  mangrove restoration.
