MFF India kick-starts new set of small grant projects

Location: India. 1st Jan 2013

Following hot on the heels of the success of cycle II of the small grants facility, MFF India has initiated its third cycle of small grant projects. The selection process was intensive, with the National Coordination Body (NCB) India, chaired by the Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Mr. Shashi Shekhar, awarding 5 projects from a selection of 52 proposals.

Chosen for implementation in fundamental marine and coastal ecosystems, including the Gulf of Kuchchh (Gujarat), Bhitarkanika mangrove forest (Orissa) and the Gulf of Mannar, and Pichavaram mangrove forests (Tamil Nadu), the projects seek to advance coastal and marine conservation through sustainable and replicable initiatives that build resilient communities. They focus on one or more of the following:

  1. Promote innovative community based coastal rehabilitation projects
  2. Build community resilience
  3. Build local capacity to implement sustainable development strategies
  4. Create public awareness on environmental issues as an integral part of the project
  5. Address livelihood, income, equality and gender based concerns
  6. Demonstrate potential for replication or scaling-up, and co-financing
  7. Create an impact on policy at National/State/District level, for Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM)

Cycle III commenced in mid-December 2013 and projects will be carried out over the next 18 months.
