How the Motorcycle Diaries Inspired Coastal Restoration in South India

In 2002, inspired by The Motorcycle Diaries and armed with over 5000 pamphlets, Dr. Balaji travelled 1200 km by motorcycle to spread awareness of local conservation issues in over 590 fishing villages in Tamil Nadu. He has continued this work over the years, accessing remote villages and working closely with local communities to spread the conservation message.

Dr. Vedharajan Balaji of OMCAR (Organization for Marine Conservation Awareness and Research), India, was awarded the IUCN CEC (Commission on Education and Communication) Chair’s Youth Award at the World Conservation Congress in Jeju, Republic of Korea, for his work in restoration of coastal environments and in raising awareness amongst local communities, particularly children, of the importance of marine and coastal ecosystems.

The award highlights CEC’s commitment towards recognizing and supporting outstanding conservation work being undertaken by youth and young professionals. The award is based on the nominee’s commitment to the IUCN vision of a ‘just world that values and conserves nature
