Protecting "Wetlands for our Future"

Cambodia celebrates World Wetlands Day and commits to monitoring survival of mangroves in Kampot province

Location: Trapeang Sangke, Kampot, Cambodia. 7th Mar 2015

Mangroves for the Future (MFF) in Cambodia, in partnership with the Department of Wetlands and Coastal Zones of the Ministry of Environment and other conservation NGOs, celebrated World Wetlands Day 2015 under the international theme of "Wetlands for our Future".

The celebration took place at the coastal province of Kampot, and brought together government, NGOs, conservation groups, local communities, and students to promote public awareness and understanding about the importance, values, conservation and wise use of wetlands. A highlight of the day was the planting of 1,500 mangrove seedlings in the Trapeang Sangke fisheries community.

The Trapeang Sangke Fisheries Community group, along with other community residents, committed to monitor and ensure the survival of the mangroves planted in the area. The Provincial Fisheries Administration additionally committed to provide technical assistance in monitoring the survival and health of the seedlings.

Mr Vanny Lou, National Coordinator of the MFF programme in Cambodia, remarked, "MFF supports NGOs and community-based organizations to implement projects on the ground in an effort to protect and manage coastal resources. Alongside coastal conservation, MFF also helps ensure the sustainability of local livelihoods."
