Journal of Marine Biology Association of India publishes proceedings from Fisheries Symposium

Location: Kochi, India. 3rd Nov 2014

The proceedings from the Fisheries Symposium held in Kochi, India in October 2013 have been published in a Special Edition of the Journal of Marine Biology Association of India. This regional symposium brought together representatives from more than 12 countries with the goal of exploring ecosystem-based approaches to protecting fisheries and marine biodiversity in South and Southeast Asia, and to share practical science-based solutions to fisheries issues.

The special edition is entitled ‘Ecosystem Approaches to the Management and Conservation of Fisheries and Marine Biodiversity in the Asia Region’ and features a collection of 17 of scientific papers taken from the 37 presentations made at the symposium. Special thanks go to Dr. E. Vivekanandan (CMFRI) for leading the Scientific Committee and overseeing the completion of the publication and to Dr. JR Bhatt, Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India, for his support and keen commitment to organizing the symposium.

The symposium was organized by Mangroves for the Future (MFF) with the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India, in partnership with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Bay of Bengal Large Marine Ecosystem Project (BOBLME), United Nations Environment Program (UNEP)and Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Centre (SEAFDEC), as well as Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI).

The main theme of the symposium is directly in line with the promotion of the 1995 FAO Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries (the Code) which calls for the sustainable use of aquatic ecosystems and requiring that fishing be conducted with due regard for the environment and promoting the maintenance, safeguarding and conservation of biodiversity of ecosystems by minimizing fisheries impacts on non-target species and the ecosystems in general.

The themes discussed at the symposium include Coastal Ecosystems and Fisheries - Towards an Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management; Spatial Planning, Marine Protected Areas and Fisheries Management; Management of Artisanal Fisheries/ Artisanal Fishing Zones; Exploring the Issues of Bycatch and Bycatch Management; By-catch, sharks, marine turtles and other endangered and threatened species; and Livelihoods and Conservation.
