Asia-Pacific Regional Training of Instructors on Ecosystem-based Disaster Risk Reduction and Adaptation

Location: Bangkok, Thailand. 19th May 2015 to 22nd May 2015

In an effort to catalyse regional collaboration among universities and institutions that support policymaking, advocacy, knowledge generation and implementation of ecosystem-based disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation, UNEP and MFF will collaborate to implement a Training of Instructors course on teaching Eco-DRR and Adaptation this May 2015.

UNEP recognizes that there are a number of significant ongoing initiatives on ecosystem-based approaches for disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation in the region, and in particular recognizes the experience of the Mangroves for the Future (MFF) Programme.

Many of these initiatives, experiences and lessons learned, however, have not yet been fully mainstreamed into university and training programmes. In this respect UNEP, the Asian Universities Network on Environment and Disaster Management (AUEDM), and MFF are collaborating to deliver a Training of Instructors (ToI) course on teaching Eco-DRR and Adaptation, to be held in Bangkok on May 19-22.

The training aims to:

  • Raise awareness and appreciation among teaching entities in the region of the linkages between environment and disasters and the role of ecosystems in disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation;
  • Introduce the Eco-DRR Master's Course and the Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) with the view to enabling teaching institutions to integrate and deliver course materials through their existing graduate programmes and training courses;
  • Facilitate networking by encouraging the creation of regional hubs among teaching institutions, and collectively build knowledge and practice on Eco-DRR at a regional level.

The target participants, who will be invited by UNEP and MFF,  include a maximum of 20 teaching institutions, including universities that may be interested in teaching/utilizing the Master's Course and the MOOC; and national or regional disaster management training institutions.
