Objectives

Improving livelihoods through sustainable use of Nypa Palm to encourage local community to protect and manage the Nypa Palm forest

Background

  • Tich Tay Village has 30 ha Nypa Palm and a population of 1620 (360 households)

  • Large market demands for Nypa Palm products, but direct income for the local community is low

  • Related regulations are available, but limited funding, management inexperience and lacking community awareness prevent the full enforcement of these regulations

Target beneficiaries

  • 50 households

Outputs

  • Market survey for nypa patch conducted in Hoi An. 
  • Contracted with wholesalers for patches
  • Training for 50 households on nypa patches production conducted, who could
  • A nypa leave grinding machine bought to produce fertilizers, which is now taken care by the management board. 5 local households have registered to use the machine to grind palm leaves.
  • A training on fertilizer production held to 50 local households.
  • 1000kg fertilizers produced.
  • No violations found in 11 conducted patrols. No destructive fishing found.
