Objectives

  • Sustainably rehabilitating 2,000m2 hard corals in Bai Huong Hamlet - Cu Lao Cham.

  • Developing 1 community treaty on sustainable coral reef management.

  • Designing and piloting 2 community-based tourism activities.

Background

  • Cu Lao Cham has important marine biodiversity, especially the coral reefs (more than 300 species, total coverage amounts to 1.5 km2)

  • The coral reefs area in Bai Huong is part of the Cu Lao Cham marine protected area.

  • More specifically, Bai Huong’s population is more than 500 people (100 household). More than 85% of the population here depend on the marine biodiversity for a living, through fisheries.

  • Great pressures from fisheries, tourism, and inconsistent public awareness result in severe environmental degradation, affecting the livelihoods of the local community.

Target beneficiaries

  • 100 households for direct aquaculture activities.

  • 30 households for related activities such as tourism services or retails.

Outputs

  • 10 local fishermen trained on coral restoration techniques and coral monitoring growth

  • 03 fishermen formally trained and got diving license by PADI, then participated in the coral replantation, 3 monitoring trips

  • Coral giving and receiving areas identified and 2,403 coral replanted in 2,000m2

  • Monitoring data for coral growth in progress, initial growth rate is at 90%

  • Third monitoring carried out for 39 coral communities/150 replanted communities. The result showed the survival rate at 82%, the growth ranges from 0,5 cm – 4,8cm - Treaty developed and enforced by the community with 29 patrols with three violations cases (fishing in protected area) handled

  • Overall coverage of corals in Bai Huong has increased by 5% by May 2015

  • 2 tourism activities identified: glass-bottomed boats, a day as fishermen. It has been also promoted through working channels.
