Optimizing Degraded Fish Ponds ('Tambak') and Conserving Mangroves at Mangunharjo Village

Objectives

The objective which will be achieved during 8 months are :

1. Promoting innovative community based coastal rehabilitation
2. Local community capacity building applying sustainable development strategy.
3. Creating/strengthening community livelihood through silvofishery
4. Increasing women role by fishery product processing
5. Coastal community empowering by utilizing degraded/unproductive tambaks for seaweed and cockle culture
6. Improving women role (especially poor widow family) through mangrove planting (mangrove nursery, restoration and planting)
7. Improving mangrove conservaton awareness and character building among children

Background

Mangunharjo and  Mangkang Wetan village, District of Tugu, City of Semarang, Central java located in northern Java, approximately 20 kilometer from center of city  Semarang, consists of 7 RW and 36 RT having area of 346,510 Ha.  Community of those village are 4.541 man, 76 people is fish farmer in tambaks and 54 people is fishermen. There is small scale industry done by fishfarmer and fishermen.  There is women small and middle enterprise named UKM Mikro Mitra Mina Serba Guna (at Manguharjo) and UKM Serba Usaha  (at Mangkang Wetan). Mangunharjo and Mangkang Wetan has  tropical climate with dry and rainy season.

Target beneficiaries

In general, the target group beneficiaries are:

1. Kelompok Petani Tambak Kalisantren (25 members), especially 2 tambaks owner who improve their tambak design for seaweed and cockle culture, 10 member of target group who are able to practice the  seaweed and cockle culture and 2 member of target group who culture the seaweed and cockle in their own tambaks.  
2. Kelompok wanita nelayan Mikrominamitra Serbausaha (25 members) who increase their income, especially  30% member who increase their  production capacity and 20% member increase their selling and broader market to other province.
3. Kelompok pembibitan mangrove (Mangrove planting community) especially 3 poor widow family involved in mangrove nursery and their income 100% increase and the target group aware about environment conservation.
4. Children and Elementary school student especially  60% target group have kowldege on environment conservation and 25% Elementary school student become Mangrove lover member group.

The additional target group beneficiaries are :

1. Community of Mangunharjo  and Mangkang Wetan Village
2. PKK Group of Mangunharjo  and Mangkang Wetan Village
3. Distinctie person of District of Tugu

Outputs

The outputs of the project are :

1. Seaweed and cockles production from degraded tambaks Production Produksi rumput laut dan kerang dari formerly degraded tambak
2. Increasing Family income Pendapatan through women activity
3. Establishment mangrove planting community
4. Establishment mangrove nursey with participation of poor community through planting community
5. Character building of children on environment conservation

Contributions to cross-cutting themes

There is gender equality in this proposed project because neither target group nor only for men but also for women and poor widow family. Access and sources equality show as small revolving fund to increase the production capacity and additional production equipment when necessary and improvement women capacity in simple book keeping and management as well as improve marketing access.
